Works on replacing Winsford Cross Shopping Centre roof are nearly complete!
Cheshire West and Chester Council has appointed a contractor to replace and refurbish the roof of the Winsford Cross shopping centre. Work is close to completion, costing approximately £1 million.
The shopping centre and all shops have stayed open during the works and disruption have been kept to a minimum wherever possible.
The main ‘barrel’ roof is being replaced with a flatter, curved clear roof, the central atrium refurbished and the external canopy at the Jubilee Way entrance has been removed as part of the works. Interior columns painted, and the flat roofs of shops renewed.
Councillor Nathan Pardoe, Cheshire West and Chester Council Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Regeneration and Digital Transformation, said:
It’s great news that the shopping centre roof is being replaced. It’s been an eyesore for years and is another example of the maintenance backlog built up by the former private owners that Cheshire West and Chester Council has stepped up to fix. The works are taking place alongside the first phase of the Council’s ambitious regeneration of Winsford Town Centre and show our commitment to improving what is there already, as well as building new. Businesses will be open as usual during the works, and noise and disruption will be minimised. When the works are complete, the roof will be watertight and the buckets will be banished – as promised!
Winsford is a thriving and vibrant place to live, work, learn and play, and the Council has committed to funding ambitious projects and developments as part of its vision for the town. The first phase of the Council’s ambitious regeneration of Winsford town centre is underway and is the biggest investment in the town centre shopping area since the 1960s, made possible by the Council’s acquisition of the site in 2018. The investment in the new roof is part of a longer-term strategy to revitalise the town centre with the demolition of units no longer fit for purpose with new public spaces alongside improved parking, cycling and walking infrastructure.
A new Costa drive-thru unit opened in May this year and a new B&M superstore will open in 2025.
